Healthcare is rapidly shifting from treating disease to preventing it. The Role of Laboratory Medicine in Early Detection

A DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan is the standard tool for measuring bone density. But laboratory investigations add an equally important layer of information — helping identify the underlying causes of bone loss and guiding truly personalised care.

Alongside imaging, the following tests are central to a comprehensive bone health assessment:

  • Serum calcium and phosphate
  • Alkaline phosphatase
  • 25-hydroxy vitamin D
  • Parathyroid hormone (PTH)
  • Thyroid function tests
  • Renal function tests
  • Bone turnover markers (where indicated)

Together, these investigations reveal whether bone loss is driven by a nutritional deficiency, a hormonal imbalance, a systemic condition, or medication. That distinction is what makes the difference between a generic recommendation and a care plan that actually works for the individual.
